Creating A Bedroom Sanctuary

Creating A Bedroom Sanctuary

Serene, calming, comfortable… these words probably describe your ideal bedroom. More than ever, we want our bedrooms to be a retreat. No wonder – with our crazy lifestyles and hectic schedules – who doesn’t want an oasis where they can relax and rejuvenate?

Whether you have a big bedroom or small, modern or contemporary, here are some suggestions to make it a sea of tranquility:

On the walls: The trend is toward muted colours – mauve and soft green are very popular. Pale blue, gray or ivory will work beautifully too. Think soothing. Many people go for a neutral palette with just a few touches of colour in accessories. Wallpaper is making a comeback too. It adds a feeling of warmth and intimacy to a bedroom.

On the floor: Hardwood flooring is always perfect, but in a bedroom, keep it cozy by adding rugs. Even something small creates a feeling of luxury.

It’s all about the bed: They call it a bedroom for a reason – so make it the standout focal point!  Luxury and abundance are the keywords. Invest in beautiful bedding, rich upholstery, lots of pillows and a bed that makes you feel like a king in his castle.

And speaking of the bed… No matter how great your bed looks, getting a great night’s sleep is the priority! Your mattress is one of the most important purchases in your home. Spend as much as you can afford on a quality mattress – for your comfort and your health.

Make it a holiday: You know how great it feels to go to an upscale hotel for an evening? Why not recreate that in your bedroom? Get a mini-fridge, an espresso machine and add fresh flowers. If you have the space, put in a sitting area and a TV if you choose. Consider it your “suite”… your best getaway from the world.

Think eclectic: Don’t be afraid to mix styles, periods and textures. Add an antique desk to a modern room. Display some whimsical artwork. If you love it, include it. It’s your space. If you’re on a tight budget, be creative. Sometimes an old piece of furniture can be painted or refinished to look amazing! Combine it with traditional furniture… mix it up!

Details always make the difference: You don’t have to spend a fortune to add charm to your bedroom. Buy a funky lamp. Get some gorgeous picture frames and show off your family. Add a collection of mirrors. Have fun!

Furniture is the foundation: The right furniture anchors your bedroom and sets the style. These days your options are unlimited. Light wood, dark wood, white, black, simple, ornate, modern, traditional, large scale or smaller size – it depends on you! Invest in quality and a timeless look that you will enjoy for years to come.
